The system of upgrading items in World of Warcraft provides players with the ability to upgrade the level of armor, weapons, and trinkets. This process is largely identical to the process used for gear reforging in Mists of Pandaria and Warlords of Draenor, but instead of using the currency appropriate to the task, players must visit an  item upgrade r NPC to complete the process.

Upgrades can be costly especially for armor and weapons. Depending on the upgrade track each step in level of the item could cost several Valorstones or crests. The total cost can be a major burden for players who don't have the resources or are unable to grind them.

Fortunately the game lets players reroll an upgraded item with an exclusive tool within the items menu. This option replaces the upgraded item with a level 1 version that has different bonus effects. Requirements

The process of upgrading equipmentable items like weapons, armor and trinkets is to increase the level of the item. This can increase their stats which makes them more powerful in combat. The initial upgrades only boost the stats of the base item by one level, but later upgrades give more substantial increases. In addition, the upgraded item will be awarded an additional stat that is based on its tier. This bonus is a combination of a guarantee extra substat as well as a random stat that can change in value from upgrade to upgrade.

Reroll Tokens can be used to reroll an item which has been upgraded. The new item will have a different set of extra bonuses as well as a lower base item level. The rerolled item will have different requirements for strength and dexterity. By selecting the item and pressing the green button that has a rerolling arrow players can reroll it to create an upgradeable item. This alters the layout of the item window and allow players to select up to six items to "recycle". The item will be replaced by a level 1 item. Recycled items don't keep their current level or amount of resources needed to upgrade them.

The highest level of upgrade an item can achieve is determined by its tier and the quality. Rare and Epic items can be upgraded up to level nine, whereas common items are only upgraded up to level six. Item upgrades are added to the base statistics of the item and do not increase after a specific point.
